CHIANG RAI

CHIANG RAI

Chiang Rai is located in the north of Thailand and was founded in 1262 by the great King Mengrai.  It quickly became the capital of the dynasty of Mangrai, until a new city was built in Chiang Mai.  As a result Chiang Rai was conquered by the Buremese and remained under their rule for hundreds of years.  Chiang Rai was only again proclaimed a province of Thailand in 1933.

An eighth of the population of Chiang Rai belong to hilltop tribes, with many Chinese migrating to the area.
