KANCHANABURI
KANCHANABURI
Kanchanaburi is Thailands third largest province and located 130 kilometres west of Bangkok. The province borders with Burma and was originally established under the reign of King Rama I, as a defence against the Burmese. Kanchanburi is well known for the Three Pagodas Pass, situated on the River Kwai. The province itself has many natural attractions, including, waterfalls, caves, mountains, national parks and of course the River Kwai.
The Three Pagodas Pass played a vital role in Thai history, being the gateway for trade, culture, religion and political institutions. The Bridge over the River Kwai is also worth a visit, it was originally brought over form Java as part of the Death Railway, linking Thailand and Burma. Although the bridge is still in use today, it was often the target for bombing raids during World War II. Originally constructed by Prisoners of War, including what is though to be nearly 7000 Australian, Dutch and British soldiers; there is now a War Cemetery to honour the many lives lost during this tragic ordeal.
