KHAO SAN ROAD - ( KOH SAN ROAD)
KHAO SAN ROAD - ( KOH SAN ROAD or KAO SAN ROAN)
Khao San directly translates to milled rice, which is attributed to its historical role, as a street rich in rice trading. The street is three blocks long and located in northwest Bangkok. The street is known for its blocks of bars, food stalls, restaurants, convenience stores, pharmacies, Internet cafés, money changing booths, ATMs, shoe stores, massage parlours, tailors, travel agencies, laundry, boxing gyms, optometrists, endless warrens of suspiciously discounted designer clothes and, rooms for the night. There are also a number of famous historical sites on the road, which have been transformed into one of the many features of the street. The area is a mix of cultures, including Muslims, Buddhists, Monks, and of course a great number of foreigners.
The Banglamphu Market is an ideal place to pick up cheap knock off, of almost anything from jewellery to shoes.
At the bottom of Khao San is Wat Chana Songkram, which translates as War Victory Temple. Many travellers use the temple grounds to connect between Khao San and Phra Athit Rd where the ferry pier is located. The temple is worth a visit, with murals, temple bells hanging from the eves, Bougainvillea vines and beautiful trees. There is no charge for admission and you are welcome to pay respect to the Buddha images or just find a little tranquillity away from the throngs of backpackers on Khao San proper. There are also many famous attractions within walking distance of the Road, including the Grand Palace.
For the more adventurous, there are Thai Boxing lessons in both the morning and evening.
