PHUKET TOWN

PHUKET

Phuket is and island and one of the southern provinces of Thailand, bordering with Phang Nga and Krabi.  The province of Phuket comprises of 1 large island, around the size of Singapore and 39 smaller islands, in the Andaman Sea.  The island is mostly mountain ranges, covered in forests of rubber and palm oil plantations.  It is from these plantations that the island used to survive, until the bustling tourism industry took over.  There are two protected National Parks on Phuket, Khao Phra Thaeo and Sirinat National Park.  Sirinat National Park also includes a marine area, where sea turtle ay their eggs.

There are lots of beaches in Phuket, with the most popular being Patong Beach.  It is centrally located on the western coast.  On the southern tip of the island other popular beaches include, Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, Nai Harn Beach and Rawai.  To the north there is Kamala Beach, Surin Beach and Bang Tao Beach.  All these beaches are however much less developed and crowded in comparison to Patong.  There are also several coral islands off the coast, well known for their unique beauty when diving ability, these include the Similan Islands and Phi Phi Island.

There are many sights in Phuket besides beaches, some of the most popular and worthwhile are,

Laem Phromthep
Laem Phromthep is a cape at the extreme south of Phuket.  In Thai the two words mean purity and god.

View Point
View Point is a spot mid way between beaches Nai Han and Kata.  It offers scenic views of not only the two beaches, but Ko Pu Island.  It is thought to be one of the most beautiful viewing points in Thailand. 

Wat Chalong
At Wat Chalong there is a statue of Luang Pho Cham, a Thai man who helped cease the Chinese Coolie Rebellion in 1876.  There are several other statues of abbots from more recent times.

Khao Phra Thaeo Widlife Conservation Development and Extension Centre
This Wildlife park was set up to conserve the number of wild animals in Phuket.  The park has a forest, with giant trees supported by buttresses, with creepers and climbers.    

Phuket Fantasea
Phukets Fantasea is a combination of acrobatics, light shows, animal action and song, which are performed together to bring to life tales of Thai history and mythology.

There are plenty of other activities on offer in Phuket, including scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming, windsurfing, yachting, deep sea fishing, canoeing mountain biking, trekking, horse riding, Thai boxing, shooting, go-karting, water ski cableways, bowling, bunjee-jump and paintball.

The nightlife in Phuket is infamous, with bars, clubs, live music and cabaret shows running until the early hours of the morning.
