UDON THANI

UDON THANI

Udon Thani is located in north east Thailand, within the city of Isan.  Udon Thani is a major commercial and support centre for the province.  The Voice of America relay station is located here, and it is thought to have been a CIA blackout site.  The city has many bars, coffee shops and hotels, mainly due to its location and importance during the Vietnam War.  Udon Thani is now best known for its mines of Potash, which is the main component in fertiliser.  It is thought there is enough potash in Udon Thani to mine 2 million tonnes for 25 years.

Ban Chiang is 47 kilometres from Udon Thani and home to one of Thailand’s premier Bronze Age excavations.  There are several interesting temples and scattered ruins.

The city is divided in two by a major highway, known as the Mithraphap Highway, which runs from Bangkok all the way to Laos.  On the east side of this highway is the Bueng Kaen Nakhon Lake, where people can hire paddle boats.  There are also a large variety of leisure activities offered here, including running, outdoor aerobics, ping pong, shopping and other recreational past times.  The night markets are vibrant all year round, with an assortment of local cuisine and various souvenirs.
